It is never a good idea, in fact it is quite dangerous, to try to do your own mechanical repairs. You need the services of an experienced and qualified mechanic for the task.
When it comes to the tyres however, the responsibility for their regular maintenance falls back onto you and there are plenty of things that you can do to keep your tyres working at optimum level.
In addition, tyres are a regular, and not insignificant, expense and looking after them now will extend the life of your tyres into the future and save you money.
With this in mind here are 5 tips for looking after your investment:
Checking the pressure of your tyres should be a weekly task and it is important that you check them when they are cold. Your vehicle handbook will tell you what the correct pressure should but if you don’t have one talk to us at Caltex Sorell.
It is worth mentioning here that your fuel efficiency is decreased by 1% for every three pounds of pressure under the recommended setting. So keeping them at optimum level will save you money.
TYRE ROTATION and CONSISTENCY
It is highly recommended that you use the same brand of tyres on all four wheels as this will keep the wear balanced. It is not a good idea to use cross ply tyres on one side of the axle and directional tyres on the other
Rotating the tyres is also important. For example the tyres on the front of your car may wear more on the inside. Rotating them regularly will keep the wear even and extend tyre life.
Regular trips to the mechanic to service the car should also include tyre checks. Get the mechanic to rotate the tyres for you and also check the tread depth. Once the depth of the tyres tread reaches 1.6 mm it is time to change it (or them).
A poor wheel alignment is guaranteed to ruin your tyres. Make sure your wheels are properly aligned at all times. See our article on wheel alignment for more information.
Hard acceleration and braking will increase wear on your tyres and reduce tyre life…as well as increase fuel consumption. Learn to drive evenly and smoothly – your passengers will appreciate it too.
At the end of your tyres life, Caltex Sorell can supply, fit and balance a new set for you. Wherever you live in Hobart tyres will need replacing at some point. Whether you are budget minded (in need of some cheap 4×4 tyres) or require high performance tyres (like Michelin or Pirelli for the new Ferrari) Caltex Sorell can cater for your needs. And remember we can also fit your new tyres on a Saturday, but please book in advance.
